KINGSPLAY

Proposition

To reinvigorate an abandoned space in order to create a welcoming community environment.

Caringbah Marketplace is a disused building which has been vacant since 2012 with no signs of development since. Locals consider the building an eyesore as it is severely neglected and the exterior has been used by youth in the area
to litter and graffiti. As the building is completely locked, it is completely unused aside from those contributing to trashing it.

The reinvigoration of Caringbah Marketplace into a public place will allow those who were disappointed in the lack of development to be excited about something and take part in it. By transforming Caringbah Marketplace into an indoor park and hang out area, local children and teens are given a safe environment for social interaction and shelter during the daytime. This area would function similarly to a leisure centre where you pay a small fee or have an access card to access the facilities.

Identity

Initially ‘Marplay’; the name ‘Kingsplay’ derives from the street name ‘Kingsway’ which the building is located on, tying the location to community.

Kingsplay must have a welcoming, family friendly feel to have the energy of a safe space for young people. The use of rounded typefaces and a soft colour palette helps to convey this feeling while still maintaining a fun and new style.

The final crown logomark is created from the angles within the letter ‘K’ and is reflective of feeling powerful when you’re having fun and playing games.

On the right you can observe logo ideation and my sanity leaving due to a reoccurring battle between myself and Adobe.

Posters

Using abstract letter forms in the poster graphics, Kingsplay displays its unique and fun personality through the soft and rounded typography. The crown and dot symbols are abstract depictions of kids playing on equipment like they would be doing at Kingsplay. With emphasis on the phrases “Hang out!” and “Come play!”, Kingsplay places its value on having fun.

Wayfinding

The wayfinding for Kingsplay is cute, simple, and is catered to children. The directional wayfinding is on the floor as kids often watch the ground while walking. Important locational information is also not too high to be consistent with children’s eye level. Rooms are numbered and colour coded so they are easy to identify in different ways for kids who are learning to read, count, or are colour blind.

Collateral

As Kingsplay has many rooms and activities, there are many ways to apply Kingsplay branding. The Café has drink and food packaging to let people know there’s a place to get food and drink inside, so they don’t have to leave the premises.

Toys and play equipment like handballs are available for loan and purchase at the front desk.

Staff uniforms feature the logomark on the front right and the primary logo is large on the back.
